Omega gives depth to its collections

Four new calibres, a new material, Ceragold, and two milestones: : the fiftieth anniversary of James Bond's first screen appearance, and the commemoration of the first Omega in space in 1962, worn by Wally Schirra. : The Swatch Group brand is starting the year with a bang.

"Our products this year are very much commercially oriented, with the advantage that they won't cannibalise each other's sales," declared Gregory Kissling, head of product management at Omega, from Baselworld. : Is this why everyone on the Omega stand is all smiles? : Fans, not to mention retailers, are spoiled for choice among the 210 or so references which Omega presented at Baselworld. : "Despite this high number, the fair has become much more of a professional event," Kissling went on. : "A few years ago, we could still make our presentations using prototypes. : There's no question of that today. : Given Omega's annual volumes, we have to come with watches which are either already in production or about to. : Basically, the watches we're showing here will be delivered in the year."

Two new useful complications

Worth noting among these deliveries are four new movements, two of which are based on Omega proprietary calibres, all of which since last year incorporate an Si 14 silicon balance spring. : The company now provides a four-year warranty on every watch equipped with this silicon balance spring. : First off the mark is the Constellation 38mm Day-Date, driven by the Co-Axial calibre 8602/8612, a variant on the 8500 to which Omega has added an instantaneous-jump day and date indication. : Two series-mounted barrels deliver a power reserve of 55 hours.

Another additional module gives the Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615 inside the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT which, as its name suggests, tracks time in two time zones. : "This calibre is part of the family of movements which Omega introduced in 2007, built around the first practical new watch escapement to be developed in some 250 years," Omega notes. : "The Co-Axial escapement in Omega calibres is used with a free sprung-balance without an index for better stability of rate. : This results in reduced friction and consequently almost no need for lubrication."

A world first

This year, Omega is also innovating in materials in the form of Ceragold, used to striking effect in the Seamaster Planet Ocean 45.5mm (Co-Axial chronograph calibre 9301), the first watch to feature ceramic inlaid with 18k gold. : It took a full five years to develop this nine-stage technique to incrust gold numerals and a gold scale into the zirconium-ceramic bezel. : Note that the 9301 movement allows the hour hand to be adjusted separately from the minute and seconds hands for precision setting in different time zones.

The Speedmaster Racing pays tribute to this chronograph's long-standing connections with motor racing. : The brand has worked on a completely "omegatized" Valjoux base to produce the calibre 3330 with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism and Co-Axial escapement. : Last in this line-up of new movements is a quartz calibre which marks the return of the pilot watch with the Spacemaster Z-33. : The multi-function 5666 movement is derived from the legendary X33, developed in the 1970s to go to Mars. : With its two LCD displays, flight-time recorder, alarm, chronograph, perpetual calendar, UTC and two time zones, the Spacemaster Z-33 puts a cockpit on the wrist.

Special editions

Omega takes advantage of two anniversaries this year to issue commemorative watches. : One is dedicated to James Bond, whose first screen appearance was in 1962 for Dr. No, and who has been an ambassador for Omega since GoldenEye in 1995. : Omega has issued a special version of the Seamaster Diver 300 (calibre 2507; COSC-certified). : In a clever reference to the credit sequence, the screw-down case back is stamped with a gun barrel, with a bullet decoration on the rotor. : Still in 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra took his own Omega on the Mercury Atlas 8 mission, making it the first Omega to be worn in space. : As a tribute to this first Speedmaster in orbit, Omega presents the First Omega in Space (hand-wound calibre 1861) which has all the technical and aesthetic hallmarks of what would become a legendary watch.
